Patrick Butler Tournament a Success

The 2^nd Annual Patrick J. Butler Wrestling Tournament was held Saturday, January 14.  During this tournament, Seaford wrestled four teams in a dual meet fashion.  All proceeds made during the day were donated to the Patrick Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund.  Special thanks goes out to the Friends of Seaford Wrestling who have always showed their continued support of this day.  This tournament is in memory of Pat Butler, an All County wrestler who was a member of the 2004 County B championship team.  However, he was tragically killed on the night that he became All-County.  The team wrestled hard for him because that’s what he would have wanted.  The four teams Seaford wrestled was Calhoun, Freeport, Wantagh and Uniondale.

            In Seaford’s first match, the Vikings dominated Calhoun 37-16.  This was a very significant win for Seaford because they were defeated by them just weeks earlier.  That really goes to show that the Vikings put forward their best efforts in fixing mistakes made during their last match.  After the match, Father Steven Camp had a very moving invocation about the life that Patrick lived.  During the moment of silence, you could hear a pin drop.

            Seaford’s next match was against a tough Freeport team.  The Vikings worked hard but they were unable to pull out the win at they lost to Freeport 35-30.  The team got renewed energy after an inspirational speech by Coach Sal LoStrappo in time for their next match against their cross-town rival Wantagh.  Wantagh had a very successful team this year so it was a good chance to see where Seaford measured up.  The Vikings really put the hammer down on a seasoned Wantagh team and the Vikings prevailed 38-20.  The last match of the day was an electrifying one against Uniondale.  Uniondale had many tough wrestlers and Seaford knew this match was going to be tough and that if one person didn’t wrestle hard the match could go the other way.  They knew that in some matches they needed more than just wins they needed pins.  In a close match Seaford won 29-28.

            After the day was over, Mike DiSilvio presented the teams with the Tournaments Most Outstanding Wrestler award.  This year the award was given to a very deserving Brian Fisher.  Brian wrestled well all day winning 3 out of 4 matches.  Brian didn’t just settle for the wins either, he pinned two of his opponents and major decisioned another.  It was evident by the way the Vikings wrestled against several top-wrestling teams; Patrick was truly looking down upon us.
